When
you think of funeral services in the Niagara Region, the Patterson
name comes readily to mind. The Patterson Family has a long tradition
of funeral service spanning several generations.
Our story begins in 1911 when John Joseph J.J. and
Annie Patterson purchased the Cornmiller Furniture and Undertaking
Business (est. 1874) located on Main Street in Welland Ontario.
Prior to purchasing the funeral home, J.J. had worked on the construction
of the Welland canal in order to make enough money to go into
funeral service, his life long passion.
J.J.
was a progressive funeral director for his time. He was most concerned
with providing superior service to his families and paid particular
attention to every detail. Soon after purchasing the business,
J.J. had the original building replaced in order to accommodate
the needs of the families he served and then went on to make continuous
renovations over the years. The pictures below show the changes.

An
article written in the Port Colborne Citizen, Thursday February
3, 1927, praises J.J. for his superior service and progressive
manner:
Mr. Patterson ensures that the equipment used by his
firm is modern in every detail. An International Truck is used
for delivery purposes for the furniture trade, while the funeral
equipment includes a beautiful Studebaker Hearse and a family
coach.

It
is evident from the constant additions to the funeral business
and his attention to detail, that J.J. was devoted to funeral
service and caring for the families he served which in essence,
is the basis for our motto:
Caring for our community is a family tradition.
